Commissions

Tue Jun 3, 2008, 1:14 PM
The last time I did some commissions it worked out well and it taught me a little bit about how the system works.

With paypal I mean and with customers. I know customer service (having done it for several years now and even set records for it) so I know how I'd like to service my customers and how I'd like to be treated as a customer.

I think my skills have grown enough to start offering up my services now. Granted I'm not as uber cool as some of these guys, but then again if you're charging up to $100 or more for a piece you've probably earned it.

How does this work?

Step 1) Give me some details, screen captures, example picture ideas, etc that you want. I'll work out something rough and email it to you.
Step 2) If you like the rough work then we'll make arrangements to send the payment in full.

Step 3) Finishing the piece and sending it off to you, making last minute corrections as needed.

Pricing will start at $10 dollars (because I want to give folks the most for their money) and will go up to $30 (for a full background/layout).

$10 (simple background, single character shot)

$20 (slightly more complex background/environment, 1-2 characters)

$30 (complex background/layout, more than 2 characters, etc)

Please send requests via PM through here or email them to giovanni[at]giovanni-wod.net with the subject line (artwork request). All images are rendered electronically and will be sent as a .jpg extention (other formats available upon request).

Thanks!

So you've finally gotten around to aknowledging your artistic side, I see.

All I can say is, "About frickin' time!!!"

You rock at composing 3D models, props, textures and such into striking illustrations. Yes, there are some people out there who do it better than you. There always will be. But there are a whole lot more people who do it worse than you (me included).

Now about those commissions of yours, I'd start by adding another $10 to the price of each! So your range is $20, $30 & $40. 1) These things take time and you should be paid for your time (base price of $10 per hour, bare minimum). 2) People tend to value something they had to pay a bit more for. If your prices are too low, folks will assume that your work isn't really worth what you're asking for it, in spite of your samples!

Number 2, above, falls under the same venue that an artist who slaps a $400 price tag on his 22"X34" desert sunset will see it collect dust in the gallery for several years. While that same painting, with a $1400 will be sold within a month of it being displayed!

Also note, it is easier to begin your prices a bit higher than you really feel that they're worth. Because, after doing a dozen commissions or so, you'll realize that your work is worth more than you were originally going to ask, if just because of the time it takes away from other things you enjoy doing as much or more. But it is much harder to raise your prices once they have been firmly established, without an massive outcry from your fanbase and a drop off in commissions when your prices go up. So 'tis always better to begin with prices higher than you're really comfortable with charging. It is easier to grow into a higher price and keep the same rates longer, than it is to start with an 'affordable' price and find that you quickly outgrow it! Trust me on this one, my friend.

Personally, I'd add $20 to each of the prices, but I don't think you have the confidence in your work to do that. So I suggested adding $10, knowing you could probably make that stretch. =D

Hang in there, Dude! And good luck with your commissions! :shamrock:
